Original and unique drawing by Sir Stanley Spencer, R.A. dated 1929 ? (lower right) in pencil. Drawing size 250mm x 350mm to a frame of 450 x 560mm. David Gale was the Spencers’ gardener at Burghclere, where the artist painted the Sandham Memorial Chapel. Spencer's patron built a cottage for the artist’s family and his wife the artist Hilda Carline, had been a Land Girl during the War and she created a productive garden at the cottage, which she re-named Chapel View. The date on the drawing was most probably added by Spencer, but at a later date, hence the question mark.
