The pop art movement started in the UK and not America, with its development rooted in the early 1950s. It presented a challenge to
traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such
as advertising, comic books and mass-produced cultural objects. One of its aims
is to use images of popular (as opposed to elitist) culture in art. This has
the effect of emphasising the everyday elements or well-known icons surrounding
us, most often through the use of irony, juxtaposition or humour. It's art for
the ordinary person by being accessible and familiar.
The four most defining characteristics of Pop art are 1) recognisable imagery and icons from popular media and products 2) vibrant, bright and saturated colours with the aim of grabbing attention 3) humour, irony and satire to make a statement about current events or to change our
perspective on the familiar and 4) mixed media and collage often combining different materials and types
of media.
