Maria Rivans grew up with her Italian family in Essex, spending her childhood drawing and doodling, listening to music and covering her bedroom walls with film and pop heroes. She studied 3D design at the University of Brighton, before turning to jewellery design and setting up her own workshop, but she is mostly known for her scrapbook-style collages.
She still has her studio in Brighton and produces mash-up images of landscapes or people fusing surrealism and pop art. She collects vintage ephemera and uses them to create dreamy realms, which transport the viewer into fantastical imaginary worlds with vivid colour, intricate detail and subtle humour.
Rivans says she is influenced by the work of Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, Tracey Emin, Richard Hamilton and David Hockney as well as the music and fashion aesthetic of David Bowie and Vivienne Westwood and the films of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch.
Her collages include different film and tv genres from vintage Hollywood, to 1970s sci-fi and B-movies. Drawing on these cultures from the past she attempts to reinvent existing film narratives while spinning bizarre and dreamlike tales with the fragmented elements of her collected ephemera.
There is a clean beauty and harmony to her images. In her pin-up series, Rivans uses iconic femininity to champion female strength. These exotic and escapist works are combined with utopian imagery from 1950s pop-culture and the obsession with consumerism.
Like Peter Blake her process begins with her extensive collection of vintage ephemera that have been scavenged from antique books and retro magazines. She is always on the look-out for that perfect ‘something’ in second-hand shops and at market stalls. Like piecing together an unruly jigsaw puzzle, she collates and assembles the fragments and scraps that she has cut out by hand. Because of the attention to detail each of Rivans’ artworks take months of careful deliberations and decisions to make.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK as well as in Hong Kong, New York and across Europe. She has also had a notable solo show at the Saatchi Gallery in London. You can buy her artwork on the website here.
